I first heard of the pop up concept about this time last year and I’m not ashamed to say that I resorted to Google to fully comprehend it’s meaning as being something or someone who ‘appears suddenly and unexpectedly’. So that’s why all these pop up restaurants etc are so much fun. We don’t know about them until the last moment and then wham bam, we have an original night to devour. The English Launderette was exactly that; original, sudden and unexpected. We booked it two nights before. The website gave little away, so we really didn’t know what to expect…except that we would be having dinner in a launderette somewhere near Liverpool Street Station. I won’t say too much either.
The attention to detail was perfect. Just perfect. The atmosphere was laid back, genuinely friendly and not at all pretentious. Our welcome drinks were delicious (Williams Gin cocktail) and were served in the bar area, hidden away from the main dining area, making it all the more exciting! When the dining room was finally unveiled, long tables and a great atmosphere welcomed us! My friend and I sat down and got chatting to our friendly neighbours. And then the food arrived. High quality, original and extremely tasty. The six courses started with a clear-chilled tomato juice, with Chase gin and devilled spices. Inspired, and very Heston Blumenthal. The cheese “n” pineapple and prawns “n” avocado were perfect, presented with a welcome twist to the norm. An overflowing mixed game grill with lovely extras was served for main, followed by a rare-bit. Dessert was very good indeed, even if you aren’t a sweet eater. All was washed down with an organic bottle of Sauvignon de Touraine (Domain Guy Allion). I loved this meal.
The £50 per head price tag plus extra for wine, was really worth it. It all ends on Monday 10 October, so make some space for this if you’re looking for an alternative and fun night out. It will put a smile on your face.

We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to afternoon tea in London and with this we’re faced with the difficulty of deciding where to go. They all sound so delicious but despite this, I am a demanding client. I do expect a superior cake etc experience in return for the somewhat hefty fee. In a nutshell, it needs to be perfect.
Perfect it was. I was delighted with our afternoon tea at the Soho hotel (part of the Firmdale Group). Being an admirer of the Firmdale Group’s interior design, the Soho Hotel instantly hit the spot on the ambience front. Full marks. The tea is served in either the dining room or in one of the two lounges. Opt for a lounge if possible. One is brightly coloured and the other more muted. Both are lovely and lavish. The choice of afternoon teas is impressive, including Traditional Tea, Summer Tea, Champagne Tea, Fruit Tea and British High Tea. Our group of seven indulged in a selection of teas, each with our very own personal cake stand and we whiled away the afternoon nattering and enjoying some exceptionally tasty savouries (as many as you like) and patisseries. My top four included the peach and passion fruit pavlova, Pimms and berry puree, champagne sabayon (I can honestly say that it gave us an instant high!), and the macaroons. Yum. Need I say more?
The service was very good and despite being quite a noisy bunch, the size of the lounge accommodated our laughter, without any complaints! A delicious, greedy, indulgent way to spend an afternoon in London. Give it a try. Oh and order champagne, we did.

Judging by the difficulty I am finding it to walk today (it’s Sunday), my first ever boot camp session with Urban Vitality was a triumph. I say this because I think this vigorous workout has honestly ‘refreshed’ the parts other ‘sports’ cannot reach. It has also alerted me to the fact that I need to get fit and most notably, I now want to get fit!! I’ve had a fitness lull for the past year, but even when I felt mighty sporty, my glutes and thighs were hardly stirred. They certainly were yesterday morning!
Arriving at Turnham Green, a big open space in the middle of Chiswick, I knew I’d arrived at the right place. There was a bunch of people doing warm ups. I joined in and John Limpus, the founder, said hi and urged me to join in the ‘fun’. He made it fun and I was instantly impressed (and even inspired) by John’s bright personality and positivity. This was going to be great. It was also painful. Throughout the session we ran, we did squats, burpees (A physical exercise performed by bending over, performing a squat thrust, and returning to a standing position), press-ups and all sorts of delightful activities to make you sweat and feel the pain. Sometimes partnered up and sometimes on our own, the focus was on working as hard as possible.
This was no walk in the park. John made us work. His ability to remember all our names and spur on each and every one of us individually, made all the difference. Despite being new to this and finding the need for coordination a challenge, I didn’t feel like a new girl and responded well to John’s goading and gentle shouting. John pulled me up on my squats. He said that I was doing them wrong and urged me to go far deeper into this simple yet uncomfortable exercise (hence the pain in my glutes and thighs!). At the end of the class, John took my details and asked what I hoped to achieve through his classes. I commented on my interest in getting fit, toning up and eradicating a small bump that is forming on my tummy! He enthusiastically told me about the elimination diet on his site and that together with the training, I should be in good shape very soon!
The Saturday morning sessions are just a taster and a good way to get a feel for this type of strenuous fitness (although I must stress that you go at your own pace and so it’s not totally impossible). John offers a programme where you are guaranteed to drop a clothes size in just 28 days and for £119 you do three sessions a week during four weeks. He also does personal training and extreme boot camp (ouch). My opinion is that John is excellent at what he does and if you’ve ever been at all tempted by this sort of extreme action on a Saturday morning, then this is the place to come! It certainly shakes you up, makes you feel happy (exercise releases endorphins, opium-like substances produced naturally in the brain, which give a feeling of well-being) and is a real thrill. Go try it!!
